Silver Leaves (SL) is the official journal of The White Tree Fund (TWTF). The purpose of SL is to educate, raise awareness, support charitable initiatives, and entertain.

Printed copies

Printed copies of SL are $20.00 CDN per copy ($15.00 CDN for Issue 1) plus shipping/handling.

Electronic copies

Electronic copies are available for $20.00 CDN ($15.00 for Issue 1).

Availability

Silver Leaves will be available in printed and electronic formats to members of TWTF and to non-members who purchase subscriptions.

Submissions

SL accepts submissions from established scholars, authors, and artists as well as from those new to the publishing world. While the focus of SL is on TWTF's mandated humanitarian efforts, particularly those from within the Tolkien community, SL is open to scholarly and creative submissions from other fandoms according to the theme of the up-coming issue.

Topics

Each issue may include a range of topics in features such as academic essays, creative writing, and featured artwork; interviews and event reports; artistic spotlights on costuming, weaponry, handmade items, and writing by invited guests; puzzles; humanitarian, community, and volunteer updates; and book and movie reviews.

Submission guidelines
General

This publication is intended for all audiences. We will not accept material containing explicit violence or sexual references. Articles, essays and creative submissions may be up to 2,500 words in length. An author who wishes to submit more than 2,500 words is welcome to contact the Publication Manager about a possible accommodation in this matter. Please submit your file in Word format (.doc) or Rich Text Format (.rtf). You may submit a text file (.txt) but you will lose any formatting you have applied to the document.

We will send you a confirmation once your submission has been received. We will notify you if your work has been selected for publication. Please note that we may request amendments during the editing process. We will forward you a Publishing Agreement and it is necessary for you to sign it before your work is published in Silver Leaves.

Please follow the Modern Language Association (MLA) referencing style (www.mla.org/style)

Fiction

Creative writing must not contain any material protected by copyright. This includes character and place names from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, including, but not limited to, names in Tolkien’s Middle-earth. For more information on copyright laws and infringement see:

Artwork

Silver Leaves can accommodate artwork up to 8”x10”. The cover will be full colour. Artwork for the cover will be selected by the Publications Committee. Fantasy- and mythology-inspired images will be accepted, including those from various fan communities.

You may submit your artwork as a colour (CMYK) file but please note that we may contact you to request a black/white version for publication. Please submit image files in a JPEG (.jpg) or GIF (.gif) format, no larger than 130dpi for viewing.

If your work is accepted for publication we will require a print resolution image of 230dpi to 300dpi in either colour (CMYK) or black/white format. The following file formats will be acceptable for print: JPEG (.jpg), GIF (.gif), EPS (.eps), Illustrator (.ai), TIFF (.tif/.tiff) or PNG (.png).
